Robotic lawn mowers are becoming increasingly popular, as they offer a convenient and efficient way to keep your lawn looking its best and free up a lot of time. However, there are two main types of robotic lawn mowers: GPS-enabled and boundary wire-guided. Here, we'll explain the differences between the 2.

Boundary wire-guided robotic lawn mowers

These are a more traditional installation of robotic lawn mowers. They use a boundary wire to stay within the designated area. The boundary wire is typically buried 30-50cm around the perimeter of your lawn. Boundary wire-guided mowers are less expensive than GPS-enabled mowers. The machine will then mow within the designated area at the set times. This is controlled either via a bluetooth mobile app, or on the control panel of the machine.

  • Pros:
    • Less expensive to comparable GPS machines
    • Not affected by GPS interuptions from large buildings or trees that surround the area
  • Cons:
    • Require specialist installation (At WGM we do this for you)
    • Although the cable can be adjusted or moved completely, or more cable can be installed in the future, this is not easy if you ever want to change the mowing area

GPS-enabled robotic lawn mowers

These use a global positioning system (GPS) to navigate your lawn. This gives them more freedom to move around your lawn, as they are not limited by a boundary wire. GPS-enabled mowers are also more accurate, as they can precisely map your lawn and create a mowing schedule that is tailored to your specific needs. If you ever want to change the cutting area, its as simple as opening an app and changing the settings.

  • Pros:
    • More freedom to move lawn mowing area in future
    • More specific mowing areas
    • Easier to install
  • Cons:
    • More expensive
    • GPS requires a clear line of site to satellites to work properly

So, which type of robotic lawn mower is right for you? It depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you have a large lawn or a complex layout, then a GPS-enabled mower may be the best option. If you are on a budget or have a lot of tree cover, then a boundary wire-guided mower may be a better choice.
